As I work on my Chinatown series, I take the stance of “the other” and therefore see things in a totally new light. That otherness creates a distance and perhaps counter-intuitively gives me access to images that I wouldn’t normally perceive. The otherness draws me into scenes and situations that, when not shooting, I tend to disregard and leave alone – as if to say – don’t go there. But moving through this area of NYC that is so different in so many ways, gives me great joy in the discovery as I acknowledge that really I’m a visitor and will not fit in. But that’s okay, because there are gifts in that approach.
